You have cataracts – now what?
Someone told you that you have cataracts. What are cataracts, and what does having cataracts mean for you?
Understandably, most people don’t want to have surgery if it can be avoided. In this article I outline what you can do to get the most out of your vision with cataracts, how to slow cataract progression, and whether it is safe to avoid surgery for cataracts.
Cataract surgery is day surgery procedure where the cloudy lens from your eye is removed, and replaced with an artificial lens implant. It can be carried out at any age and usually requires only a local anaesthetic and light sedation.
You’re thinking about cataract surgery
You’re having surgery, or maybe just thinking about it. What is the operation like, what choices do you need to make before surgery, and what can you expect afterwards?
This handout will help you make an informed choice about the intraocular lens implant you have at the time of cataract surgery.
Choosing the right intraocular lens implant is crucial to getting the vision you want after cataract surgery. Toric lenses are more expensive, but for people with astigmatism, a toric IOL will provide sharpest vision and reduce your need for glasses.
Cataract surgery can change your vision and reduce your need for glasses. Some people even stop wearing prescription glasses forever. So why do some people still choose to wear glasses after surgery, and what are the trade-offs for being totally glasses-free?
Cataract surgery is a great operation to improve vision and quality of life. While most patients see some improvement as soon as the next day, people having cataract surgery — like any surgery — benefit from a recovery period before they are at their best again. In this article I outline what the ‘typical’ first few weeks are like, and answer your most common questions.

You have uveitis
You or someone you know has been diagnosed with uveitis. It’s normal to have lots of questions about this uncommon condition.
Uveitis refers to a collection of inflammatory eye conditions. Uveitis is most commonly cause by autoimmune disease, but it can also occur due to infection or injury.
Other eye conditions
I see a wide range of eye conditions, from emergencies to chronic disease. See below if you have a problem not covered in the previous sections.
This handout explains how to manage your blepharitis, to control dry eye and irritation symptoms.
Dry, irritated eyes are a common reason for referral. Lid care, lubricants, omega-3, and more. Try these things before reaching out for an appointment.
